I've often heard it said that the Jews were expecting a human Messiah, but how do you reconcile the above verses with that expectation?

I don't think that there was any unified Jewish expectation.

Isn't this referring to Hezekiah?

Is the child in Isaiah 9.6-7 the same as the child Immanuel in Isaiah 7.14-16; 8.8?

Ben.

The last time a fundamentalist told me what kind of messiah the Jews were expecting, I asked him to cite a first-century Jewish source. He never replied.

I should point out that I asked the question purely out of curiosity, not because I think it lends any support to the claims of Christianity. There's absolutely no basis from reading the OT to even believe that YHWH exists, let alone that he would send a human and/or god-like messiah to the Jews.

Aren't Paul's letters and the gospels evidence that some Jews were expecting a god-like Messiah?

I wasn't meaning to make any presumptions about your views, just noting that it was a good observation on your part.

It could be, but then how do you explain him being referred to as "the Mighty God"?

Ben.
Has anyone ever put up a good argument making that connection?
