Depends who you talk to. I think to his early followers he was a charismatic preacher, and many of them hoped he would be the Messiah who restored the kingship of Israel and liberated it from foreign rule.

To the early Christian churches, he was a messenger of God, maybe (but not necessarily) an aspect of God. By "God" here I mean a mishmash of the Hebrew God and the Platonic creator God that Greek and Roman pagan philosophers had postulated.

To the Roman Empire, he was a useful tool around which to build a state religion, once they managed to recast him as similar to the conquering warrior deities they were used to, complete with ritual sacrifice and rebirth.

It's been years since I read the gospels so I'll leave that to the experts.

Why the church fathers who assembled the New Testament didn't make more of an effort to cover up the contradictions in the accounts. Did Judas hang himself, or did he throw himself off a cliff?

They perhaps existed as human beings, though the story as told is far too much hearsay to really know what they were like. No. No. No. Not really. No. We don't know what jesus taught. all we have are second hand accounts repeatedly mangled to conform to the viewpoints of other people. That aside, from what we can see, it doesn't appear too unique or insightful. non sequitor. You tell me. I like Sparrow's answer. Leading question. Why did anyone bother? Didn't they know there was enough religious nonsense in the world? the devil is no more a real concept than the "son of man". It's impossible to prove silly things like this false.
