Death by fashion?
According to Josephus (Antiquities 19.8.2 343-361) and Luke (Acts 12:20) Herod Agripa died a horrible death after appearing before a crowd at a dedication ceremony in Ceasaria. Josephus adds the detail that Herod dazzled the crowd by wearing a shining silver outfit woven from fine silver thread.
1. Could this silver outfit have been the cause of his death? 2. How would silver thread have been made in the 1st century? 3. Silver tarnishes. Silver thread would tarnish very fast. How would a silver garment be polished? 4. Could a silver outfit become too hot in the sun and cause a heat stroke. 5. Could the outfit have been Chemically poisonous? |
