Health in the Ancient Near East
Just came across a fascinating book and lecture series about health services in the developing world.
http://hesperian.org/wp-content/uplo..._2013_full.pdf "Where there is no doctor" Quote:
At the beginning of the Gospel of Mark we read that Jesus was baptised in the Jordan. Was there a dead sheep floating in it? Was the area malarial? Did Jesus get smallpox? If there were any history at all in these documents, would not something of the reality of life have crept in, apart from wonder stories of healing the sick? How many of Jesus's brothers and sisters died in childhood? Why no mention of Jesus losing a little finger by sawing badly one morning after a party the night before? |
