Well, forgery is pretty much the religious standard from the first word of Genesis onward. So these people are merely carrying on a religious tradition.

Money, yes. Also its cousin power. Both of which provide better sex options, but the church has some odd and inconsistent attitudes there.


One of the best recent cases was Mark Hofmann, who forged early Mormon documents. It also led to multiple murders. One of the most controversial was the "salamander letter". I read this book a while ago. Well worth the read.
