Rook Hawkins on Misquoting Scripture
I have received the following. I know nothing about it - if anyone is in the area, it would be nice to get a report.
Misquoting Scripture: How Literary Tropes Created Christianity Join us on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 for a presentation by Rook Hawkins, historian of Classical Civilization and comparative religious studies and co-founder of the popular internet radio shows, The Rational Response Squad and Rook’s Nook. Hawkins is currently undergoing the process of Peer Review for his upcoming book, Discovering the Gnostics: A Look at the Evolution of Mystery Cults in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. Presentation Details Today, millions of people worship the Christian God, practicing Christianity and following a creed from the New Testament partially established under Athanasius and others shortly after the Nicene Council in 325 CE. Millions of people believe that the church was founded by a historical Jesus , but do so without realizing that this narrative utilizes literary tropes to retell the same story of the Greek Old Testament and much earlier narratives of the Greeks and other societies of the Ancient Near East. The motivations and socio-cultural foundations of Hellenic Jews will be explored as a means of understanding why such stories were created at all. Though I haven't thought much of the stuff he's put out to date: Good on him! Always good to see someone following their passion. I admire anyone who can put themselves out there like that. I hope it all goes well for him.
