In my 25 years as a Catholic, I never met another Catholic who thought Protestants weren't Christian. Perhaps it's because we were outnumbered greatly in my area by Protestants, particularly Baptists.

I was raised Catholic and considered myself catholic until I was well into my thirties. I, too, never met a Catholic who thought Protestants weren't christian.

Yeah, it's amazing how consistant humans are...the majority lets the bigots crawl out from under the rocks.

Yeah, but those folks aren't natives. They only *immigrated* to Scotland.

Any ideas on how to deal with this problem if I encounter it in the future?
Some Catholics are Christian, some aren't. Just like some Protestants are Christian, some aren't. Protestants just tend to question the committment of Catholics due to the Church teaching many heretical, anti-Biblical/Christian doctrines.

Half my extended family is Catholic. The other half Episcopalian.

We all get along quite well. And nobody thinks anybody is not really Christian or going to hell.

Then, many Protestant sects teach heretical, anti-Biblical/Christian doctrines as well.

How do you determine who is and who isn't a Christian?

I'd say that you should bring Charismatic Catholics to their attention. There's a book (and I think it's out of print) called Father McCarthy Smokes a Pipe and Speaks in Tongues, that explores this movement within Catholicism. I'm not sure this would work with Baptists, but it can certainly work with those that come from a Pentecostal background. But then, you'd have to get around to asking if they felt Pentecostals were Christians, and you'll get some hem-hawing around I'm sure, even though they probably won't deny Pentcostals the Christian label.
