it is my interpretation that this was full of erotic metaphors. she wasn't mystically filled with the love some supernatural entity, but was describing love making. an orgasm. and that "long spear of gold" that belonged to the angel, was her lover and his penis. she was basically telling people "sex is great!", very poetically.

Reminds me of a web site that I haven't been able to find for years, which purported to be accounts of the epiphanies of a teenage fundie girl who was sitting on a washing machine in the basement at the time of her epiphanies.

This seems more of a GRD topic.

I suspect that St. Theresa is not trying to tell people that sex is great (is that something that needs to be said?) but that religious experience is orgasmic, even more so than earthly pleasure.

I don't know, but she might have been experienced what is commonly referred to as an orgasm. It is a biochemical and hormonal reaction which makes procreation more stimulating.
