Default Is Jupiter a Corruption of Japheth

Some Christians say that Jupiter is a corruption and deification of the biblical Japheth. Wikipedia has this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japheth
I just came across this today... would any of you have any info on this? Is it spurious scholarship or is it fairly well backed up? (if that's possible)

Widipedia is free collaborative software, and that entry was written by a volunteer. You can see comments on it here. If you have the energy, you can submit corrections.

Jupiter is usually considered to be cognate to Greek Zeus Pater or Deus pater = father god. Any connection to Japeth sounds fanciful at best.

Jupiter is from the Etruscan words for "sky father." It has nothing to do with any Jewish word. (Cross post with Toto.)

(((Blush)))
Thanks guy's
Thats why I asked here because I thought I could get a quick answer...

Hey, I realized a little later that wiki is user editable. Hey, but guess what, and I lie not, Christian web sources are quoting this like mad as some sort verification of the bible.

Yawn. I wuz asleep. Toto got it right. Zzzzz. Oh yeah, and... Why does one have to deal with linguistic half-wits all the time? We've heard some fanciful "scholarship" here. Hell, I'm waking up... A good rule of thumb is: trust no linguistic argument put forward by a mother-tongue English speaker. They are almost universally inept linguistically. Yawn...

Okay,
Now I get what "Spin Blast" means.

Spin,
I guess I deserved it, but it was an honest question and now I know better. That’s how we learn sometimes, by asking dumb questions.

My first clue should have been that ONLY Christian sites were making this etymological claim. I stumbled across it doing some research on Jupiter trying to verify some of the “Christ Myth etymology claims. “Jove Pater “

Thanks for the reality check all.

My bitch was not about the gullible, but about the inventors of the stupidity. They simply don't check their claims. Someone wakes up one day and thinks, for no other reason but serendipity, that it must be so, then spreads the good word, and hundreds of dullards are foisting the rubbish on unsuspecting shills. You choofed off here and asked about it. They just spread it.

This is a generic problem. Someone wakes up with an idea. It must be so. It is disseminated as being so. One accepts the tradition, because one belongs to the culture which disseminated it. This is the case with the church fathers. They believed what they received. We have a bunch of xians trying to attack the christ myth theory by arguing a reality based on the traditions the church fathers received. They believed what they received from "trusted sources". It doesn't matter to us whether it was right or wrong; it matters that it was a trusted sources and so was obviously right. That's how it becomes right. People too often confuse tradition with fact.

Please listen to my general rule of thumb: trust no English speaker bearing etymologies. You'll be sorry nine times out of ten, if you do.

Oh, and look here. And use the site in the future for your average etymological query.

Thanks for the link on etymology, spin.

FYI.
I am someone rethinking the faith. I have finished reading my first book on the Christ Myth, "Christ Conspiracy" and I'm only checking the claims. I was nearly duped by the wiki entry and so I came here to ask people who I thought may give me some pointers, and so you have... thanks much.
