What if Christianity hadn't come along when it did?
If Christianity hadn't come along when it did, the vast majority of people would have continued to follow Judaism and pagan religions, both of which would have been poor choices indeed. Christians and skeptics will quickly agree that pagan religions were poor choices, but Judaism is where the agreement ends. Assuming that Christianity did not come along when it did, I invite Christians to defend Judaism as being a rational world in ancient times. I also invite them to tell us why in Old Testament times God limited knowledge of his existence and will to the general area of the Middle East.
Since a good case can be made against Judaism and pagan religions, I believe that it is logical to conclude that since Jews and pagans had already demonstrated that their judgment was faulty because of the world views that they chose, that there are not any good reasons at all for anyone to assume that Jews and pagans who became Christians finally got it right. If Christianity hadn't come along by this time, 2005, a good percentage, if not the majority of the people who became Christians, would be followers of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc., proving that religious minded people will choose a religion even if it is not true in order to satisfy their desire of achieving immortality, and not just any old immortality, but predictable immortality in comfort. |
