Old Pamphlet on Napoleon?
This article refers to "the famous cynical British pamphlet, proving that, in terms of formal logic, Napoleon could never have existed, being far too mythological to be true."
Does anyone have any idea on how I can read this pamphlet? Please, no discussion on the likelihood of Napoleon's existence or any other famous figure. best, Peter Kirby |

There is an Open Court publishing house in Chicago, but I suspect that this pamplet is British.
Perhaps Bede could help you. |

Re: Against my better judgement...
How's your french?
http://www.phdn.org/negation/fous/napoleon.html This does not appear to be a BRITISH pamphlet, and appears to rely on pseudo-pagan cult conspiracy theory stuff, not formal logic, so I'm not sure if this is what M. Cheminade was referring to. Then again, Cheminade, LaRouche, et.al. find Freemason/Zionist/banker conspiracies HIGHLY logical, so who knows... (I assume you know who LaRouche and Cheminade are?) |

Thank you, S.H. That is interesting reading. Apparently the French librarian J.-B. PĂ©res (1827) was writing against C.F. Dupuis. An online copy of his work can be found here:

Searching the Tekton site, I find that there is a separate British pamphlet along the same theme:
http://www.tektonics.org/JPH_DMMM.html Then there is Richard Whately, in "Historic doubts relative to Napoleon Bonaparte" (London, 1849) shows, on the basis of Hume's criteria of assessment of evidence and testimony, that Napoleon never existed. [Univ. Lib. 562:3.c.95.5] cited by Jardine/Frasca-Spara here HPS Part II Primary Sources: David Hume, 'Of Miracles' Will the wonder of the Internet also produce Whately's document?! best, Peter Kirby |

HEY! This IS interesting!
But if you go farther into the article cited in the OP, you'll notice that the speaker seems to use, of all things, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Great Shadow" as an example of those nasty british Napoleon myth-mongers. I can't think of anything funnier than a French nationalist getting huffy over Doyle. Sacre bleu! |
