If I lived in a society that claimed to uphold justice yet saw examples of unaddressed injustice all around me I might be tempted, in my disillusionment, to turn to supernatural assurances.

Surely this sort of mixed-messaging is at the root of much religion: "Forget politics and law, because there is no justice in this world." There is a certain logic to it, in a fatalistic kind of way.
