There was a guy in a yahoo group that said that elef (hebrew, thousand) was an Egyptian word for pyramid gang.
That "solves" the problem of the 2 million Israelites because you can divide the 600,000 men by 1000 and get 600. Of course it is a disaster theologically, the various half shekel censuses, become dubious, etc. You have to move the Exodus back to 1800 BCE to have this work, and then there is the little detail that slaves probably didn't build the pyramids anyway. It's not like they wouldn't hire free men because of government paper work and pension costs. There are various technical reasons that 1800 is dubious also. Did Jewish Slaves Build the Pyramids?
