Is there a progression of pre-Christian thought that explains the origins of Christianity?
Your wording is a little bit wrong here Reena and that is what leads you astray. The aim of religion is metamorphosis which is native to mankind but is not possible as a human effort and therefore religion must perform this mystery on our behalf. Because metamorphosis is native to mankind there is no copyright on the act but there are very unique ways to bring this action about. This is where religions can be similar and borrow decriptive metaphors that they can change to suit their local conditions.

Accordingly, then, Christianity is not a faith but a state of mind in the likeness of God which was ours in the beginning and to which we can return in the end as Christian = "the mind of Christ" as the end of religion.

Religion speaks on behalf of the transformation (John 5:39-40) but is not the end itself. The Gospels show the way but we must live them as if we write our own and compare notes.

Here's a very unique example of that:

Death of Aeschylus:

According to legend, eagles picked up tortoises and attempt to crack them open by dropping them on rocks. An eagle mistook Aeschylus' head for a rock (he was bald) and dropped it on him instead.

The above is a nice metaphor in retrospect but cannot be incorporated in religion because where I live there are no tortoises but there are lots of rocks and eagles.

The same is true with the flood, which is a nice metaphor but we have to be a Noah before the flood can be ours if we must survive the flood when it comes our way. So important here is that we are a Noah and the flood will come our way with or without water.

Religion makes us an 'ark builder', if you wish, or 'shiner' in the sight of God that our dowry may be dropped unto us, someday, in the convergence of the twain.

In Christendom Catholicism is the way and Christian-ity is the end. The rest is make-believe.

Jesus suffered to set Christ free and Jesus died to rise again and be Christ with Christ in Christ Jesus to become the Jesus Christ of history. Jesus suffered willing because Christ was in charge of his destiny.

It is by having the Jesus identity crucified that Christ was set free which they called Bar-abbas in the text because Pilate was not a Jew and did not re-cognize the Jewish identity. Notice that Jesus is never called Christ until after the crucifixion of Jesus = the man set free was Christ when Jesus died.

But Christ without Jesus is not corporeal and therefore God and Lord must become one in Christ Jesus with Jesus being subservient to Christ as an add-on by means of resurrection to become the Jesus Christ of history.

Notice the "Mary, there is your son" while Jesus was still hanging there. At this moment Christ (once called JohnB by name) was the son of Mary until Christ took her under his care to be Christ Jesus (she was the dowry of Christ that makes Christ Jesus and entity).

I hope it helped.

LOL, it goes Joseph, John, Jesus, John who once was the water that kept his boat afloat. That's important if we want reason to prevail.
