Book recommendations -- Jewish hopes/expectations
I'm interested in Jewish expectations (what were they expecting their god to do for them, what would the future be like) both in the Hebrew Bible and in second temple Judaism.
e.g. how did the concept of a "messiah" develop, or when did belief in resurrection come into Judaism. Can anyone recommend books? |

Metamorphosis is the most basic of all human rights in Judaism for which the annointed must first arrive and then the temple be destroyed so that the annoited can be raised, to show that Judaism is antecedent to that event, but must die to set him free.

Neil Godfrey has written some blog posts on this.
I recommend going to the Vridar blog and searching for Messiah. You can read the posts there or look for the books discussed - e.g. The Jewish Gospels : the story of the Jewish Christ (or via: amazon.co.uk) by Daniel Boyarin Christ among the messiahs : Christ language in Paul and messiah language in ancient Judaism (or via: amazon.co.uk) by Matthew V. While it is a little tangential, I would recommend anything written by Wayne Meeks especially this book:
http://books.google.com/books/about/...d=F5Y3AAAAIAAJ The concept of messiah is rooted in Moses and the expectation of one like him in Deuteronomy. |
