I think he works on the principle that he doesn't have to demonstrate that his explanations are probable (or even plausible...), only that they're a possibility. His audience is largely made up of believers, so he doesn't have to convince anyone, just give then rationalisations for the insanity contained in their supposedly inerrant book.
