There has been no comment here on the latest bit of archaeoporn - the alleged discovery of the nails that were used to crucify Jesus by the Naked Archaeologist. Perhaps it was just too ridiculous, especially after the lead codices fell apart.

But for those who are interested, there is a 5 page essay by Joe Zias on scribd. It is easier to read if you download it.

Quote:
More Amazing Dis-Grace- The JESUS NAILS: The Naked Truth vs The Naked Archaeologist ($imcha Jacobovici)

“ a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. W. Shakespeare- Macbeth Act 5

Joe Zias, Jerusalem

Has the ‘Naked Archaeologist’ become a clone of the ‘Jerry Springer’ show? If one looks at the track record of both programs one could easily say, yes. The former being as close to archaeology as women’s mud wrestling is to Olympic Free-style wrestling. Anything goes, and the bottom line is ‘will it sell, can I make a buck off it, are there enough idiots out there willing to watch what is in reality, trash TV’. If it were available in the supermarkets of America, it would be found not in the section where newspapers are sold but at the checkout counter along with those magazines telling the public about Big Foot, aliens, flying saucers etc. Something to read in line before checking out and if bought, good for wrapping fish.

Simcha and the BAR crowd certainly have been consistent with claims of finding the unusual, three tombs of Jesus , James brother of Jesus Ossuary, Jesus on Masada, bogus claims of deceased colleagues who ‘knew’ that the Talpiot tomb was that of the Jesus family, lifetime achievement awards to a deceased colleague’s widow who never published anything in his lifetime, tombs and caves of John the Baptist, Teacher of Righteousness and now Jesus nails, not to mention using the Holocaust when he needed to be self vindicated.

Have they compared them to the marks on the Shroud of Turin? If the nails are really the holy nails, then they should match the marks.

I got a whole bucket full of rusty Christ's crucifixion nails out in the barn.
Easter's just around the corner. How many would you like to buy?

Is it still fashionable to use a nail to affix a thesis to a church door?
If so, I could use a few --- but thank chrestos for the internet.

Anyway, the tradition says we should be looking for bits in a horse bridle.
The nails were searched out and retrieved by the intrepid Helena.
The reports say they were melted down for Constantine's horse's bridle.
That sounds about right to me.
Gandalf had a special horse too.

What I dont understand is that the cross is supposed to have walked out of the tomb after Jesus. (gPeter)
So if the cross walked out of the tomb, what three crosses did Helena find?
She could have found the wrong one.
OMG.

There was a story by Conan Doyle -- was it "Sir Nigel"? -- where the faking of relics for profit was depicted vividly.

It's worth bearing in mind that, in these frauds, Christians are nearly always the intended *victims*.

All the best,

And also interesting is just how often they fall for it.
Time after time, scam after scam, the filters that allow them to operate in modern society just fall away when the subject touches on their beliefs.

Frightening.

Indeed you are right. Separating the gullible from their money has been a cottage industry in the region since the 4th century.
