Default Psalms 69 "poison and vinegar"

Is it true that it was a practice to give some sort of seditive with "gall and myrh" to people who were crucified? That seems kind of inconstent to me if crucifixion was intended to give maximum pain and humiliation. I believe the Hebrew implies/says putting "poison in food", which would seem to imply things eaten/drank at an actual meal, which would seem inconsistent to the Gospel accounts, but I still wanted to know if this was indeed a practice. Thanks.

Doubtful.

Vinegar would be mixed with water by Roman soldiers, it was called posca.
It made low grade water safer to drink as the vinegar disenfected water. Last thing you wanted was your soldiers all sick with dysentary.

Thus, if Jesus got water with vinegar, it was because this is all the soldiers had.

Since crucifiction was supposed to be a painful death, I doubt anybody got any sort of drugs.

Thanks for the response. I find it interesting that this Psalm is number 69.. is it possible that there's a link between this and the weeks of Daniel 9? When I read this Psalm, it mentions zeal for the temple, God not despising his prisoners, God saving Zion and building the cities of Judah. Was this written during the Babylonian Captivity or even possibly during the situation with Antiochus Epiphanes?

I don't think the Psalms were numbered in an indiscriminate way..it seems some were related to important numbers in Judaism.

According to the Babylonian Talmud Tractate Sanhedrin
http://www.sacred-texts.com/jud/t08/t0809.htm
Quote:
When one was going to be killed, they used to put a grain of frankincense in a goblet of wine and gave him to drink, so that he should become dazed. As it is written [Prov. xxxi. 6]: "Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those who have an embittered soul." And there is a Boraitha that the wine and the frankincense were donated by the respectable women of Jerusalem. Now, if it happened that they were not donated, who must bear the expense? Says the Gemara concerning the latter: Common sense dictates, at the expense of the congregation, as the verse reads "give," which means the congregation.
Although the Babylonian Talmud is later than NT times this claim may be relevant.
