Default Constantine's Sword

The documentary based on Constantine's Sword (or via: amazon.co.uk) by James Carroll is about to be released. It is a history of Christian anti-Semitism, starting with Constantine's vision of the cross, and his elevation of the cross as a symbol over the earlier Christian symbols of the fish or the anchor.

Release schedule, starting this weekend in New York.

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League has charged that the film is "a propaganda film that trashes Catholicism", but James Carroll writes:
Quote:
"In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II apologized to the world for the sins of the Church. Our film simply lays out what those sins were. Pope John Paul was not a Catholic basher and neither am I" – James Carroll

Next week, "Moses' Sword -- a history of Jewish crimes".

No question of bias, eh?

I bet Muhammad's Sword would cause quite a commotion.

Toto should have left a tray of cheeses out for the whine that was sure to follow.

I saw this film at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. I found it very well done and very moving. Carroll weaves in his own personal history as the son of a top military official who became a priest who opposed the War in Vietnam, and the documented history of the church. The net effect was not anti-Christian - the crowd was overwhelmingly Christian, and appreciated the film.

Carroll remains a committed believer, although he left the priesthood. It might have been easy for him to give up on the church, but he did not. Instead, he is pushing for renewal.
