Thanks, DCH, for that response.

Yes, I think that all the arguments do not negate the possibility that the Josephan writer did write the passage in question with the 'christ' mention. It's just too easy for some ahistoricists/mythicists to cry 'interpolation' - simply on the grounds of their ahistricists interpretation of the gospel JC story. To my thinking this approach to the Josephan passage is not only illogical - but also puts a stop to any further investigation of the Josephan writer. And that is where this debate should be going - investigating the Josephus writer instead of attempting to discredit him. Josephus needs to be put in the dock - and investigated as soundly and critically as any work done on the gospel JC story.

If it was Josephus, then it strengthens the argument that this "Jesus" was negatively described previously. That might make sense of Origen saying that "even though Josephus did not accept that Jesus was the christ, he nevertheless came close to the truth in saying ...". However, there is no tradition in Christian circles that Josephus actually spoke negatively of Jesus, or even relayed that Jesus claimed to be the christ.

If the term is from Josephus, it would be against his normal use, as the only other place the word christos is used is to describe the plaster used to cover the roof of the temple. He uses related words a lot, like chrism and the verb Chrio to describe to describe the anointing of, or the anointed status of, priests and kings, who receive some sort of sacred charge to duty. Josephus deftly disassociates the term christos from prophetic speculations. He had told Vespasian that HE was the person so designated by the Jewish sacred writings to rule "about that time." He COULD have called Vespasian God's anointed, as did "Isaiah" in the case of Cyrus the Great (45:1), but deliberately did not do so.

If a copyist added the term "legomenou christou", whether it was meant to have the meaning of "so-called christ" or simply "Jesus called christ", he may have just been stating his own opinion as to who this Jesus referred to was. In the circles of the copyist, "christos" could be a title for Jesus of the Gospels, or a technical term for an "anointed" High Priest (say, Jesus son of Gamalas) or one that was destined to be a High Priest (say, Jesus son of Damneus).

There were a couple of cases where it did seem to mean "so-called" such as in "a city so called" where a town is called a polis (city) even though it lacks a proper Greek constitution that goes with the name. Some of the Macedonian kings of Egypt and Syria often had nicknames such as Eukairos ("well timed", as in "just in the nick of time") accompanied by legomenos.

Go ahead, nit pick ... and yes, I made a few changes to Whiston's translation. Note the wild difference in place names between the Greek and the English translations. I am not sure I like that in a translation ...

So, DCH, do I take it that you agree with LegionOnomaMoi, and Earl, that Josephus could have written the words "called christ' in the James passage?

LOM,

Because I didn't. In BW you can get a "verse list" with all forms of legw and the Greek of the verse, but since I am not a high falutin' Greek expert like you, I have to do it the hard way. I need to see a translation of each passage, so I can determine for myself how case and number affect the way it is used. If I don't do it the hard way, I don't learn anything.

The answer, of course, is "With great difficulty!"

I used Kalos 4.11 to create a chart of all forms of the participles of Lego. I copied and pasted the Middle Voice results into an Excel spreadsheet and broke up the data into several columns. Then I created a column for the Bibleworks code needed to search for these various participles in Josephus' Works, which is set up to display the Whiston English Translation and the Greek and a morphologically tagged Greek version. Then I copied the results for each search code (sans the Morphological version) into Word, cut & pasted to categorize them by case, then sex and number, copied that version to a new document, and cut away at the text until I had the right sized snippets.

Took about a day and a half.
Why didn't you just go to Perseus and search for all froms of "le/gw" in Josephus' works? Sure, you get extra hits (non-participial forms), but surely looking search results like this would take less time (I know, Tufts' servers are annoyingly slow, and thus the pages can take forever to load, but I've found that sometimes if you hit refresh or click on the link twice it loads right away instead of spinning its wheels forever)?

Note: once the link loads, for those not familiar with Perseus, just click on the blue link next to the work's title which says "More(798)"

Ok, I will.

1. Would have been better to provide a link to Whiston's translation, so that we could compare his translation, with its defects, to yours.
BibleWorks gives the chapter subdivisions as they are found in academic editions, based on the Greek text. If you look in the appendices of Whiston's Josephus: Works you should see a table that roughly equates the beginnings of Whiston's chapter and verse divisions and that of the academic editions.

2. What do you mean by "Middle Voice"?
Greek verbs have "voice" that indicate whether the subject acts upon the object (Active), or the subject is acted upon by the object (Passive). The Middle voice can mean both may apply at the same time. Some verbs only appear in their Middle form, but are used as active voice verbs. A participle represents the action of a verb but used as a noun modifier. Legomenos literally means "being.said".

4. λεγόμενος would appear, from your excellent chart, to represent both Masculine and Neuter form, in the Nominative case, i.e. was this Christ deity described as Masculine, not Neutral? Is that logical? Why would a supernatural, omnipotent deity be presented in a merely masculine form? Does it follow, or is it a mere coincidence, that Hercules was also a male, in his human form, before ascending to Heaven, to reside for eternity with the Gods?
That is the beauty (and bane) of the Greek language, which conveys a lot of meaning in the way words end and sometimes start. Greek nouns are "inflected" which means they fall into defined forms. Nouns are either masculine, feminine or neuter in form. The sex of nouns often has nothing to do with the sex of the person it describes. Modifying words such as participles (a kind of verbal noun) take the form of the word they modify.

We "high falutin' Greek experts" have access to the online Thesaurus Linguae Graecae. Much better methods of searching and many more texts, but no translations.
