One passage that I have seen offered as a proof text for "Paul advocated lying for Christ" is I Cor. 9:20-22: And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, not being myself under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law.I believe this was just his way of saying that when he was in Rome, he did as the Romans. |

Richard Carrier said Paul said he willing to lie to win converts and quoted those verses' is that where you heard it.
I,m always abit causious with Carrier because of that and another time when the Bible says that the locals in Malta thought Paul his companions were Gods because they healed a man who couldn't walk or something like that. Carrier down played it and said it was a bad leg. |

I was about to mention this same verse. I have always interpreted it to mean that one may lie in the conversion of souls to Jesus. And taking into consideration history's title given to Saul/Paul (the Liar), it would be apropos. |

Yes
The article I'm talking about is his kooks and quacks article. It wasn't acually in Malta I,ve just looked it up. In Malta the Bible says Paul was bitten by a snake. What I was refering to is Acts 14 where it says Paul healed a man who was lame from birth'and who had never walked' and the locals think they are Gods. Carrier says they thought they were Gods because Paul cured a man with a bad leg' but I would say it says it's more than a bad leg. Chris |

Kooks and Quacks says nothing about Paul claiming authority to lie to promote Christianity.

What I said was that Carrier says in Kooks and Quacks that the people in Acts 14 believed Paul and Barnabus were Gods because Paul healed a man with a bad leg. What I said was that I thought he downplayed it abit' sounds like abit more than a bad leg to me. Acts 28 is another possible example. Carrier says the locals thought Paul was a God because he survived a snake bite. But Acts 28 may be saying they thought he was a God because not only did he not die' but he suffered no ill affects' not as sure about that one' it may be saying they thought he was a God because he didn't die mainly. Carrier did say that Paul near or enough admitted he was willing to lie in a different article I think' I will have to find it. Might be his rebuttal to the impossible faith or Why I don't buy the reserection story not to sure. Chris |
