Biblical Accuracy of TPOC
To those who have seen The Passion of Christ, how accurate would you say the movie was to the biblical accounts? I did see the movie, but I'm not incredibly familiar with the accounts in the gospels.
I'm going to read them myself again a little later I think, but I was just curious on other's opinions too. The biggest thing that stuck out to me, that I feel Mel invented, was the sequence of events leading up to Pilate agreeing to crucify Jesus. According to the bible, the way I remember it is that the crowd hands over Jesus, Pilate doesn't want to crucify him (or at least is weary or seems troubled by it), but gives in shortly thereafer. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that, because what happens in the movie is this: They hand Jesus over, Pilate refuses to crucify him, sending him instead to Herod, who also refuses to crucify him. Then the crowd takes him back to Pilate, who AGAIN refuses to crucify him, but says he will instead just beat the crap out of him and then return him to the crowd. After whipping him and whatnot, the crowd still wants him to be crucified, so Pilate reluctantly gives in. Is it just me, or did Mel invent that whole thing about refusing twice and handing over to Herod in the middle? Sorry if this has been talked about already, I haven't been to the forums in a while. Also, if anyone else noticed any other biblical inaccuracies (i.e. where Mel deviated from the gospels or specifically invented things that could not be logically inferred from the gospels), I would be interested in hearing those. Thanks. |
