If prayer works, prove it.

For those who believe in prayer, prove that it works. Even though deep down you know it does not.

Just think of a prayer you prayed either today or in the past and present proof that your prayer or prayers were ever answered.

Was it really answered prayer or was there just something about what you prayed for that could just as well be explained naturally?

Maybe you prayed for a job, some money or a raise in pay or prayed for someone to get well from a sickness or whatever. If you received a raise after praying about it what makes you think it had anything to do with a deity listening? If you prayed for someone to get well and they eventually got well, don’t you think it was because of natural causes? I think it was.

I often hear Christians assert that god answered all of their prayers with a either a yes, no or a maybe. I have always found that quite amusing even during my fundy years as a believer and I even had a problem with it back then.

With that said, present your answered prayer testimonies and we'll scrutinize if they were really answered prayers or not.

Please be as brief as possible and not post an essay.

Prayer always works.

If you get what you prayed for, then prayer works.

If you don't get what you prayed for, then god knows what's best for you, and that's why you didn't get what you prayed for. So prayer works.

I'd love to a see a matrix that plots which believers claim prayer works versus which use some variety of the free will defense in their apologetics. I bet the hypocritical overlapping is tremendous.

That's almost like saying that if god never answers any prayers then prayer still works. Sorry but that doesn't cut it.

I think it was satire. Its based on the "God works in mysterious ways" defense. Pray for a million dollars, but didn't get a million dollars? God doesn't want you to have money - it is not his plan for you. Why not? God works in mysterious ways... Design an experiment to test prayer (such as for distance healing) but get no effect? God doesn't want to be tested.

Oh and prayer works, but only when the prayers are directed towards me. Don't listen to that asshole George Carlin who is trying to lead you astray. I wish I'd thought of it, too. Unfortunately, it really isn't satire. This is the standard answer I've encountered when discussing the efficacy of prayer with acquaintances who believe in same.
