So obviously what changed this belief is a historical Jesus

I am not sure implied is the right word, since rope was apparently a live option.

The gospel of John has nails (20.25), and so does the gospel of Peter (6.21), and so does Justin Martyr (Dialogue with Trypho 97.3b).

I know of no text offhand to confirm that hypothesis, but it is a great point. As they say, even if it turns out wrong, it was worth mentioning.

Ben.
FWIW modern reenactments in Mexico occur exactly this way. Yes, some participants actually have nails driven through their palms (but a link eludes me). Additional ropes are then used on the arms.

No reenactments with nails through the feet or wrists however, at least not yet.

Does that mean they are crazy but not stupid?
