Easter as Vernal Equinox split from chronology of Easter weekend
Its quite clear that Constantine hijacked the Panhellenic celebration of the vernal equinox as the official "Christian Easter". This was one of the important matters discussed at Nicaea - the canon of Constantine's bible was not mentioned. But they could not have made a worse decision.
Pope Gregory had to massively reform the calendar as a result of Constantine's edicts. Three cheers for Pope Gregory! Constantine clearly did not seek or take the advice of the Greek philosophers, astronomers and mathematicians, who were aware of precession. The Christians were easily confused over celestial chronology because they were not impressed by the study of astronomy. Quote:

Gregorian calendar
I'd be interested in hearing about any opinions as to why the history of easter as derived from the planetary vernal equinox is not ultimately related to the calendrics and chronology used to calculate the easter weekend and the appearance of leap years. Has anyone ever taken a look at the algorithm used to calculate these two things, and the history of adjustments that have resulted since the Council of Nicaea? |
