Revelations
Most of the NT higher criticism that I have seen (and most of the discussion on this forum) seems to concentrate on the Gospels and the letters of Paul.
Can anybody recommend a good resouce that discusses Revelations? A web reference would be best (because my wife will emasculate me if I buy any more books!) but I realise that web references aren't always as detailed as books, so both web and book references would be good... Thanks in advance! |

Revelation is about events that happened around 70 a.d. (not current day events) This fact is clearly mentioned in the first couple of verses. You need someone to help you misunderstand this IMHO. The book was written prior to 70 a.d. http://www.preteristvision.org/quest...ationdate.html http://www.preteristvision.org/quest....html#subhead1 |

Four main views:
http://www.graceonlinelibrary.org/full.asp?ID=635 (see also the menu on the right for parts 2 and 3) see also http://www.confessionallutherans.org/papers/revtoc.html http://www.historicist.com/ http://www.preteristarchive.com/ (see menu to the left) http://www.brethrenonline.org/dispens.htm ——————————— http://www.knoxseminary.org/Prospect...ect/index.html (despite their conservative starting points, this site provides a somewhat different approach to the book of Revelation by treating it textually not as "apocalyptic literature" but as a Comedy in the classical sense) Given the plethora of views out there, even the most thick-headed reader should see that unmerciful dogmatism regarding interpretations of Revelation is not plausible; but note also ought to be made that there are a few common themes throughout the book that the world-wide Christian Church (past and present) does agree upon. Cheers for the links, guys.
Most of the links seem to be discussing how a Christian should interpret Revelation. I was actually looking for something more along the lines of... When was it written? What do we know about 'John of Patmos'? Did he exist or was it a nom-de-plume? Was it all written by the same author or do stylistic analyses show later additions/alterations/interpolations? What other apocalyptic traditions does it borrow from? Bernard Muller's page is the sort of stuff that I was after (Thanks again, Peter). Anyone have any more references like that, so that I can compare them? |

{added} Just checked LT Johnson's intro and he has a rather lengthy section on revelation and it's relation to the other Johannine writings as well. |

For example the beast coming out of the sea...try Daniel. The harlot...try Jeremiah or Ezekiel. IOW to a first century jew these images would be seen to come from their sacred books. Some may be astronomical also.http://redbay.com/ekklesia/revsign.htm |
