How many lashes?
What was the regular number of lashes for people condemned to crucifixion?

There was no limit. Josephus talks about people being whipped to the point of exposing their entrails.

In much more recent history, 40 lashes was considered the equivalent of a death sentence.
And this was not with metal flays in the whip like the Romans liked to use. Of course, if one survived the bruising, the cutting, the loss of blood, the internal damage; if they managed to avoid infection sickness, and were still able to carry on in the disease and vermin infested hole they were typically thrown in afterwards; if they later emerged alive, it would be a pretty clear sign that they were somehow "chosen" for something. Such is the stuff that legends are made of. |
