Default Is Matthew Jewish?

Greetings, all.

The normally sleepy Crosstalk list,

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crosstalk2/messages

has now exploded into something like 60 posts per day, and all because of the above question... The Feathers are Flying!

IMHO the question is rather silly though... Any rational person should understand that Mt wasn't written all in one day, and not even in one year.

What we now know as Mt was probably a work in progress, in a major way, for at least 100 years. So which 'Matthew' was Jewish, and which one was Gentile?

There probably were a whole bunch of Matthew's -- some of them living perhaps even as late as the 4th century. Some of them living even in the 19th century (also known as Westcott & Hort).

The Greek text of Mt was only settled in the 19th century. This is a fact! But, I guess, our zombified academic scholars would rather live in their own little fantasy world where there was only one 'Matthew'!

Cheers,

Yuri.

As Groucho Marx said, "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." And that goes double for Crosstalk.

Hey guess what Yuri? Where's the evidence? Oh, right, you're immune. Why don't you actually try using some actual evidence instead of merely shouting your opinion.

Nothing to do with the topic, but for some reason you reminded me of this:

Roses are reddish,
Violets are bluish,
If it wasn't for Jesus,
We'd all be Jewish.

All the best,

???

Are you denying that Westcott & Hort published their own version of Greek Mt in 1881?

Yuri.

Oh please, Yuri. It's one strawman after another with you.

It doesn't seem like you're interested in a serious discussion of this subject...

It doesn't seem like you are, either. You called the issue silly. You ad hom the scholars. And you expect us to take you seriously? You might want to reconsider your presentation.

There is a big difference between writing a gospel, scribal alterations and text crit attempts at restoring the autographs.

Better:

Roses are reddish,
Violets are bluish,
It's because of sweet Jesus
That we're all now quite Jewish.

The issue here is the fluidity of gospels' text in the 2c. Feel free to contribute!
