Poll: The Historical Jesus Christ
What do you people think that the historical Jesus Christ was?
These possibilities are distilled from Historical Jesus Theories Theories of the Historical Jesus 1. A god-man hybrid and savior of humanity; the Gospels are literally-true history. 2. A wisdom sage; a Jewish imitator of the ancient Cynic philosophers. 3. An apocalyptic prophet; a proclaimer of the imminent end of this age in the fashion of John the Baptizer. 4. An anti-Roman revolutionary leader. 5. A Jewish holy man. 6. Something else (please explain). 7. A myth; there was no historical Jesus Christ. 8. Magical brownies. I've made this a multiple-choice poll because some of the possibilities are not mutually exclusive. |

I voted magical brownies, because I really dont know who or what Jesus may have been. I'm much more inclined to think that Jesus was a total myth, rather than an actual person whose life was blown out of proportion. I think that Richard Carrier's arguments have really gotten to me.
I understand that the majority of biblical scholars feel that there was an actual Jesus-person, but I've found arguments for a mythical Christ, such as the "Jesus never existed" ideas, to be more convincing. Mithra comparisons, etc. Still, I haven't done any serious research on this subject, and therefore I am an agnostic (without knowledge) as well as an atheist (without belief) on the matter of whether Jesus existed or not. And anyway, the magical brownies are delicious. |

Malachi151, you are correct; Tigers's position is the first option -- I wanted to express it as succinctly as possible, even if my expression of it seemed misleading to him.
And it looks like the "holy man" option might also include "mystic". |

Quote:
A mystic is someone who participates in or practices mysticism. To the point, a holy man is named so by interacting with others. A mystic may be unknown by any, holed up in a cave contemplating reality. I see both of these in the Jesus of the various gospels. |

I went for a wisdom sage and apocalyptic prophet. That would fit my guess of this Yeshua dude from 2000 years ago. I figure other stuff was grafted on, even from other real people, as the decades went by. He was probably a non-conformist, who annoyed the powers that be, just too much and got the ax. And the rest is pseudo history...

I'm way undereducated on this topic, but that didn't stop me from voting anyway. Wisdom Sage. Yes, I believe there probably was someone named Jesus who actually existed, and was actually some kind of teacher/philosopher.

I wanted to vote god man hybrid and myth (with strong elements of a character in a play, story)!
