walking on water allegory
this is a spinoff to 'The Gospel of Mark as Reaction and Allegory' thread
http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=225107 which neatly deconstructs mark but with problems with where Jesus walking on water derives from, I don't know if this a widely held view or debatable or original but is it not likely that it is an allegory of Moses parting the Red Sea? Moses is leading the Israelites into a new eon of milk and honey [to be carried out by his son Jesus] . Jesus represents the leader who would take the Israelites into the new eon following the end times. what do you think or is this a rather tired idea? jules |

The usual critical interpretation of this emphasizes the calming of the seas, rather than just walking on water. I think that some of the Greek gods did this.
There may also be a reference to Psalm 89, where god is said to "rule the raging of the sea." |

Quote:
After seven days I dreamed a dream in the night and behold, a wind arose from the sea and stirred up all its waves. And I looked and behold, this wind made something like a figure of a man come up from the heart of the sea. And I looked and behold that man flew with the clouds of heaven; and wherever he turned his face to look, everything under his gaze trembled, and whenever his voice issued from his mouth, all who heard his voice melted as wax melts when it feels the fire. It hard for me to imagine that the writer of Mk 6:48-52 was not familiar with this vision. Jiri |

It points out that Moses was wrong to part the waters to get into the promised land where they did not belong and subsequently wandered for 40 years and died nonetheless.
It goes back to Gen.1 where the sea was the place where knowledge is retained that dry land may appear which God called earth with heaven above . . . until we come full circle in Revelation and there find that the sea is no longer and heaven comes crashing down when water and land become one once again. The allegory represents 'going by intuition.' |
