Default Seminary question

I saw a recent post in BCH which stated that students at seminary are taught that the original authors of the gospels are not the well known 4.

can this be verified by someone ? anyone ? please

(I do not want this thread to turn into a debate about who the writers of the gospels were, I'm questioning how the names of the gospel writers are attributed at seminary ?)

any insight would be appreciated. thanks

Wouldn't it depend on the seminary?

I should have aniticipated that reply

okay, yes of course...but even to get aknowledgement and proof that "some" seminaries teach that the authors of the gospels are not known would be good enough for me.

come on peeps help me out here

I don't think you'll find many here who went to Seminaries...

At a guess, I'd say most liberal seminaries would teach their students that the four Gospel authors are unknown. From what I know about them, they are pretty honest about the Bible's problems because they don't consider the numerous errors in the Bible to be a faith show-stopper. Conservative seminaries like those belonging to the Southern Baptist Convention obviously would not.

As far as Christian message boards go, you might try searching for message boards belonging to the more liberal denominations like Episcopalian, Lutheran, and Methodists. They should be fairly tolerant of difficult questions from unbelievers as long as you are polite. Be advised, even these denominations have their conservative elements, so there is no absolute guarantee the message boards will be liberal.

Try SperoForum. I've seen them ban more Christians than atheists. In fact, I don't think they've ever banned an atheist - at least not while I've been there. And my own survival there is testimony to their tolerance.

I was taught this when I was in seminary in 1955! That was the Claremont School of Theology. Any seminary associated with a mainstream church or that is connected with a secular graduate studies program will teach it (and a lot more!). Off hand: Princeton, Boston U, Harvard, Yale, Union (NYC), Emory, Iliff, all of the Episcopal seminaries, U. Chicago, Garrett (Northwestern). It is also taught in undergraduate college courses in both secular and denominational schools, such as Whittier (Quaker).

I know for a fact that Hope College and all RCA(reformed church of america)seminaries teach that we have no idea who authored the gospels. Also Calvin seminary of the CRC(christain reformed church) teaches the identity of the authers is unknown.

For ChrisWeimer,
This is a derail sadly.
I saw your reference to Speroforum and paid it a visit, mooched around a bit , saw your name, went into the language section and saw a thread on 'oral tradition' and found this link.
http://www.biblicalstudies.org.uk/ar...on_bailey.html
The author involved in that section was the subject of a rather scathing rebuttal, re his oral tradition material, at the hands of Ted Weeden, I think it was.
Do you have a reference to the Weeden articles in question?
I'm presuming you are knowledgable about this.
cheers
