Default More Golan Tidbits

I stumbled across some old remarks at Stephen Carlson's Blog archives which cracked me up:
  • There is one interesting fact that came out of Golan's remarks: I learned that Golan's mother was "a professor of microbiology in Rehovot." This fact, however, makes his story somewhat more difficult to believe that his mother was responsible for accidentally depositing the fake patina when cleaning the ossuary. What scientist goes around a son's antiquities collection destroying evidence?

....and this one about BAR:
  • The first item of interest is a correction to Shanks's "Lying Scholars?" piece in the May/June 2004 BAR. In that article, Shanks had examined an allegation by Eric Myers of Duke who stated that he had talked with two scholars who had seen the James ossuary in the mid-1990s without the "brother of Jesus" part of the inscription. One of those scholars has already been named as Joe Zias. The importance of the charge, if true, is quite apparent, but, to me, the allegation seems rather difficult to verify, since witnesses' recollections change over time, there may have been a similar ossuary over which one could be mistaken, etc. But Shanks took a different tack: he located the dealer where the ossuary had been seen and identified him as Mahmoud Abushakra and published an old photo of the shop. According to Shanks, Abushakra stated that "the ossuary had never been in his shop" and denied knowing or hearing of Joe Zias (and the other scholar).

That was the background of the charge. The correction in BAR pointed out that the photo of Abushakra published in BAR also had Joe Zias in it! The correction characterized Zias as a "passerby," but to me it looks like Zias was actually turning to enter the shop.....

When all is said and done, no sceptic can disprove the ossuary that was found with Jesus sone of Joseph's name on it, in a family tomb that also had Mary named.
