Default Understanding Passover dates

The synoptics say Jesus was crucified on 15 Nisan, and John on 14 Nisan. I've read that if a date had to be picked from those two as to historical plausability, 14 Nisan would be more realistic since it is incredibly unlikely any Jew would hand over another Jew for crucifixion during Passover. Most readings I see say that 14 Nisan is Passover eve. But according to E.P. Sanders in The Historical Figure of Jesus, 14 Nisan is technically "Passover" and 15-21 Nisan is The Festival of Unleaved Bread. Granted the whole 8 day period is/was generally referred to as Passover, but how can people say that 14 Nisan is Passover eve when it is actually the first day of the 8-day Passover festival? Aren't both dates equally implausible since both are technically during "Passover"?
