Default 60 minutes weighs in on the ossuary

cbsnews.com has a 60 Minutes story about the James ossuary and Oded Golan posted. Certainly nothing new there, but it is interesting to note that this was posted on Easter day. Maybe the US popular press is finally getting around to publishing this. (I get a kick out of the line "60 Minutes has learned...". It must have taken them fully 15 minutes on the net to gather the facts for this report. )

Fox News did an Easter special which included an interview of Lee Strobel. I had heard his voice enough on radio to have formed a mental picture of what he looks like. As always seems to be the case, the image I had formed is nothing like what he actually looks like.

I saw the show and was very pleased to see that they took a peak at both sides of the "Stone Box" issue. They didn't make any attempt to appeal to solely Christian viewers, such as by disregarding the skeptical arguments. They didn't end the segment with a cheesy "But maybe it really is genuine; We'll never know for sure" sort of escape. They just said it like it is... The inscription is a forgery. Period.

I especially liked when they got to the bit about the police raiding Oded Golan's apartment. "And where did they find the ossuary?" And then flashed up the infamous photo of the bone box sitting on top of a toilet. No need to say anything.

They also touched on the idea that the worst damage done has been to archeological knowledge. Good for 60 Minutes.

On the other hand, it would be ironic if the forged carvings are on the right box. That happens often.

Default "60 Minutes" shreds Biblical hoax

Did anyone else catch the story on 60 Minutes last night about the ossuary supposedly containing the bones of Jesus's brother? I commend 60 Minutes for tearing this hoax apart properly.

If you missed the show, you can read about it here:

I think most of the ossuary talk usually happens in BC&H, so I'm going to shift this over there.
