I'm attempting to read through the Bible this year and I'm amazed at some of the misguided and just plain stupid ideas that the Old Testament has to offer.

I'm in the Book of Leviticus and wonder if Christians really know that their god is so cruel. When it comes to serving as a priest, God don't want no cripples:

Lev. 21:18- 21
"For any man who has a defect shall not approach: a man blind or lame, who has a marred face or any limb too long, or has a broken foot or hand, or has a humped back or is a dwarf, or has a defective eye, or has oozing sores or scabs on his skin, or has damaged testicles.Even though he is a descendant of Aaron, his physical defects disqualify him from presenting offerings to the LORD by fire. Since he has a blemish, he may not offer food to his God."(New American Standard Bible)

I wonder why Christians don't have slaves anymore? Just go to the "pagan" nation of India an get yourself a few!

Lev. 25:24-"As for your male and female slaves whom you may have--you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you." (New American Standard Bible)

We all know god from his P.R. campaigns as a real "Family Values" sort of guy. Well, if you piss him off by failing to follow all of his laws....look out! HELTER SKELTER!!!!

Lev. 26:22-"I will release wild animals that will kill your children and destroy your cattle, so your numbers will dwindle and your roads will be deserted."(New Living Translation)

So Jehovah finds a daycare and sends a pack of wild animals to kill all the toddlers and babies there because of something their parents failed to do? :banghead:

I should just be glad that most Christians DON'T read the Bible! (At least not the ones that I know).

Don´t worry, Christians always have a way to explain away tales of gore in the Bible, and to claim that God is love or any crap like that.

Leviticus was an eye-opener to me too. How can anyone get that dogmatic about the incidence of mildew in buildings?

As for the alters, after the amount of blood that has to be splatter on it from all directions, I can't help feeling that the atmosphere in the tabernacle must have been more than a little, ummm, well, thick with vapours to say the least!

Although I'm not sure how much this is mentioned in Leviticus itself, but probably all over the Torah, why did God have such an obsession with everyone's penis?!

When I was a Christian I spent most of my time in the New Testament so what I'm reading now is a real eye opener to say the least!

The god of the Bible is so worried about mildew, blood spattering, killing people for incest (something that Lott's daughters and Adam and Eve's kids got away with!!!), skin rashes, the penis thing, and turning Jewish worship services into one big slaughter house! No wonder the Jews were always going after "other gods"! A female deity was probably much less demanding...and much more sane.
