Default The shrouded man

Finally, a first century shroud found in Jerusalem. One that is very different in fabrication and design from the Shroud of Turin.

Quote:
This is also the first time fragments of a burial shroud have been found from the time of Jesus in Jerusalem. The shroud is very different to that of the Turin Shroud, hitherto assumed to be the one that was used to wrap the body of Jesus. Unlike the complex weave of the Turin Shroud, this is made up of a simple two-way weave, as the textiles historian Dr. Orit Shamir was able to show.

I read the "wire" article because of the disease angle, but luckily it also comments on the shroud, though it’s a little hasty for this particular project to offer an opinion of the Turin shroud. The article is also a bit uncritical in its adherence to the Gospel narrative, but perhaps I don't read enough mainstream press on religion anymore. After a search I found a Daily Mail article focuses more on the shroud, and it's two pieces.

Are there still people around who think that the Shroud of Turin isn't a fake?

I thought that even the Catholics have abandoned this one and tossed in the shed where they put the magic angel feathers they used to carry into battle.

Yes, Arnoldo cites the Shroud of Turin as physical proof the resurrection of Jesus actually happened.

Ben Witherington apparently believes that the shroud is genuine.

This article also discusses leprosy. Some Christians have claimed that the disease described in the Bible was not what we know now as leprosy.

From David Meadows on Rogue Classicism:
Quote:
this isn't a new discovery ... remember the '1st century leper' story/cave
of john the baptist stuff from five years ago? this is it (and the discovery
was actually made in 2000/1) ... i've blogged on this, of course:

And from Joe Zias on ANE-2:

Quote:
{It's a]years old story being re-cycled by the folks that brought us the 'John the Baptist' water cistern where Jesus and John were baptizing and then the burial Cave of the Jesus Family tomb. Neither of which were accepted by anyone but those publicizing it. As far as lepra goes, back in the 60's or 70's Danish leperologist (Mollar-Christiansen) took 30 medical students from Denmark to work in ALERT, African medical facility for those suffering from Hansen's disease. When they rtn to Denmark, all tested positive for the disease, but they will never get it, never, they have it sub-clinically, that's all. Typical BAR crowd sensationalism.

Yes, indeed. Most of them are probably the same people who still believe that the Gospel According to Matthew was written by some guy who gave up his job as a tax collector in order to become one of Jesus' disciples.
