A simple or difficult question.

I was once reading a great book by a french author (or french sounding name at least) explaining the origins of the OT and who wrote it. Going into details about "J," "P," "E," and "D". Explaining the NT in the second part of the book (if I remember correctly).
But, I left it in the train :banghead:

Now, I'm really interested in buying it again but of course forgot the name of the author and title.

It's definitely not in the sticky list.

Any thoughts?

I don't have a particular author in mind, but the theory is called the Documentary Hypothesis, and several authors have written about it. You could start with that.

I would recommend Richard Friedman's book called "Who wrote the Bible".

Who Wrote the Bible - Amazon link (or via: amazon.co.uk)

Was the book in French? Perhaps Albert de Pury or Thomas Romer?

(Hi BC&H folks!)

I will order Friedman sometime. I wanted to buy that one for some time, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well, it was written in english. This could mean:
1- It was a translation
2- the author wrote it in english in the first place but had a french name to confuse me.

Ernest Renan ? His book "life of Jesus " made waves when he wrote it in the 1850's . It has an english translation too .
