I was under the impression that Mary's pregnancy was hidden till she and Joseph were married to prevent her from being stoned from the townpeople.

If we assuming that God exists who can create the entire universe, human life, and the means for reproducing human life in any way he chooses, could he have produced a human fertilised egg in Mary's womb with whatever DNA and pre-dispositions he wanted? Of course he could. Therefore his gender and nature are irrelevant.
