The (Relative) Location of the (Submerged Remains of the) Martyrium of St. Mark
Sorry it has taken so long to get any real information out to everyone but here is something I can share about our discoveries. My contact notes:
I am attaching 4 photographs of the Alexandrian coast east of Silsileh Promontory where I now have the near certitude of having spotted the site where once stood the complex of building with the Basilica and the Martyrium of St. Mark: Let me comment the various photographs (the 'Zodiac' is the name of the small boat they use to do limited investigations of the shoreline): 2604 - 2665 At circa 300 m west of the Chatby Casino is the site of the Martyrium; half way to Cape Lochias. The Zodiac tender is on the location where the two early Byzantine capitals were found 2606 I believe that the coast and sea area shown on this photograph correspond to the Martyrium location. 2667 The position of the Zodiac on this photograph is near Silsileh promontory (across the Bibliotheca Alexandrina); all this area is scattered with large architectural elements --some brought during the Medieval times from the ruined Basilica and dropped as buttresses to the action of the waves in order to protect the what remained from Cape Lochias, the Eastern boundaries of the Eastern Port. |
