Question panetary deities & the 10 commandments

I recall seeing somewhere an analysis of the 10 commandments, that went something along this line: The commandments were not really 10 independent statements, but 2 paragraphs, each paragraph consisting of a prologue followed by several commandments. The "thou shalts" were in one set and the "shalt nots" were in the other set. Especially the "shalt nots" were aligned with condemnation of worship of the planetary deities. E.g. No gods before me denied the worship of Jupiter, Not to covet denied the worship of (Roman) mercury, no murder denied the worship of Mars, etc. Does anyone recall where this ot a similar analysis was published?

No, but I think it's cool. Would you mind posting what all of the connections were? (Though I could probably figure out most of them on my own.)

Yes, I never knew that there was a systematic connection between Roman gods and violation of the Ten Commandments.

Actually, though, one thing I like about the Roman pantheon is that you can very easily form that kind of connection in regards to anything you want.

Well, think of the Chaldean/Babylonian mythos - astrology was all ther age, and the Egyptians also were very fond of star gazing. We have a batch of panets that are mythographically deified:

Sun (...)
Mercury (thievery, usuary, business in general) - no coveting
Venus (lust, love, etc.)
Moon (mysticism, foretunetelling, etc.) -
Mars (war, and killing in general) - no murder
Saturn (...)
Jupiter (largest panet, to be sworn by) no false witnessing

There is an alignment betwen these and the commandments, but I cannot reconstruct it at the moment.

What I find interesting, ist hat this converts the commandments for god-driven to priest-politician driven.

I am not aware that the writers would have known of the Roman pantheon.

Of course not - the roman names are merely convenient handles for me to illustrate a concept space. The chaledean or bablylonian names for the planets they may have know of, though, and those were I believe worshiped as deities.

Understood, but the problem is you may not have the same correspondence as you have with the Roman deities, particularly in a document that is trying to set its deity higher than any other in the area.

This is an old mistaken by western educated people. Because the planets in the sky are in harmony with the hole nature and its specific spiritual qualities are mirrored in the character of time and beings, there were respected and studied by astrologers = magicians = mathematicians = priests (until today) as objects in the sky/heaven. From this comes the superposition of the western idea of sky and heaven as different objects. The specific spiritual meaning of the planets have not changed since ever, and were also known to the Jews in big. They have Shamash (sun), Sin (moon), Melech Zedek/Melchizedek (Jupiter = 'King of righteous') Astarte = a_star_te = Ashera = Inanna = Venus). The spiritual qualities of the planets one can find in a good agreement with the character of twelve sons of Israel (Jacob) in the OT translating the Hebrew Names of them. The ten commandments have nothing directly in common with the planets; they are updates from the codex of Hammurabi. Some more deeper information you can find on this URL's:

Seems to me the numerosity is wrong for planets, but closer to the 12 zodiacal signs (bablyonia loved the number 12 - thus 360 degress in a circle, 24 hours in a day, etc.).

For the secular commandments, I would be surprised if any code anywhere did NOT have them. For the non-secular ones, again, I would guess theocratic necessity would again force a certain conformity. I was more interested in finding the arguement than in supporting it. A scratching in the back of my memory indicates that Robert Graves may have had some words on this, but I cannot find it.

The twelve 'sons of Israel' are the twelve astrological houses, but the Hebrew meaning of the names of the sons do not match at all with the astrological meaning of the twelve astrological houses, while the planets meaning does:

Names of the twelve sons of Israel/Planet: Meaning of the Hebrew name and the timeless astrological meaning of the planents

Simeon/Mercury: hears of, speaking of hearing, writes, reads
Levi/Saturn: bandages, adherence, solid
Judah/Jupiter: kindliness, father, justice, fullness
Naphtali/Mars: fighter, fight, strength
Gad/ -- ? : luck
Asser/Venus: cheerfully, fires, fire, beauty (Venus=Ashera)
Issachar/ -- :venal
Sebulon/ -- :water fish
Josef/Moon: he who life gives

The character of this 12 son's are explained in the OT in this manner and by each Hebrew bible dictionary.
