Default What if Jesus wasnt resurrected, but instead......

I literally JUST finished reading the book of John as promissed. The first thing that strikes me, as I just finished reading, is that it seems everytime Jesus appeared to his disciples after the crucifixion they didn’t recognize him. In fact, I do remember reading in one of the gospels, don’t remember which, that he appeared "in another form" to his disciples. I am inclined to believe that if this is a true story, which has not been proven, then it may not have been Jesus who appeared to the disciples at all. Another person perhaps?

Why assume that there is any factual basis for John? The non-recognition of Jesus by his disciples sounds more like a literary device with symbolic and theological meaning.

....then dead people really could walk out of their graves, gods could take human form, windy storms could be calmed by words, and spooks could be unrecognizable from their previous incarnate form.

I just don't get it. What's the point of your question?

I think I understand intel2000's question and I'm pretty sure I read a book in which it was discussed or, at least, mentioned. I don't recall which one, though.

IIRC, it was suggested that a completely different person could be considered Jesus resurrected and support was offered by appeal to Herod's question about whether Jesus was the Baptist "risen from the dead" (Matthew 14:1-3).

I believe there are also some non-mythicist theories that the resurrection was spiritual, or that it was imagined.
