How would the Gospel read, for HJers?
I understand that most scholars believe there actually was a historical Jesus. I sometimes come over and read debates, but after all is said and done, I'm curious, how would a gospel written by the HJ school look like? I know they differ among themselves, but in short, what would a "standard" Gospel, written by the HJers, contain? Could you give an "abstract", a list of items most probably left out, as well as those kept in?

The idea, for me in any case, is not to make a new Gospel. The idea is rather to properly read the ones we have. The main way of achieving this, afaics, is to organize the material around the incendiary prophetic personality of Christ. The authenticity of a given passage is judged according to the degree to which it enhances or detracts from the portrait of the central figure.

You got me wrong, NoRobots, I wasn't asking about how you live religion, I was asking about something purely academical, a sort of synopsis of the ideas of HJers after so many years of textual analysis.

Are you asking what a "gospel" would look like, or what a secular history of Jesus would look like?
Presumably at least one or more of the gospels were written by HJ'ers - Mark might be an allegory, and John might be too mystical, but Matthew and Luke appear to present a historical Jesus in the midst of the legend. Or do I understand your question? |

There is no consensus among HJers. What I offered was my own way of sorting through the material as a non-religious student of the HJ.
