I have been approached to write a review for my site. Should be fun.

best wishes,

I'm buying the book if only to read the part about the tomb visits. If the Gospel stories weren't written that way, they should have been because it sounds like it would be hilarious on film! It very much reminds me of Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead and I love that movie.

PS the site works fine with Safari as well.

From what little of Atwill's book I've read, and from reading your review, it would seem to me that whatever points Atwill may have can simply be explained by a later dating of the Gospels. After all, it's obvious GLk used Josephus.

I've read Mason and Carrier on this subject. I don't believe that it's 'obvious'. Would you like to start a new thread on how it is obvious or certain?

best wishes,
Peter Kirby

Not particularly. I hadn't read Carrier's article before, it was just something I myself had gathered from other sources and my own reading of Josephus and Luke.

That's interesting. If you hadn't read Mason or Carrier, what are your sources on this subject? I would like to follow up on them.

Also, since you say that you've found indications from your own reading of Luke and Josephus, it would be appreciated if you would share them. They could be entirely new to me, and that would be helpful.

thanks,
Peter Kirby

I totally agree. I'd love to see that too.

No, they cannot be explained by a later date. Atwill argues that the Gospels refer to Titus, that Josephus has been tampered with (not merely used as a source) and even further, that the two were written to reflect one another. Late gospel dates explain only part of that. They do not, for example, explain the independent alteration of Josephus; for example, his adjustments of the fall of the Temple to coincide with the prophecies of Daniel.

I hope Atwill gets reviewed by a professional with an interest in Josephus and not just us interested laypeople.

Sorry to disappoint, but my reasons are nothing new. I was aware of the idea from this forum and my own reading, probably from Raymond Brown. What particularly struck me in my own reading of the Bible was Luke's knowledge of the rebel leaders like Judas the Galilean, and how he mentions the same three Josephus does.

Vork, I will have to give Atwill another shot. I didn't get very far before I thought it wouldn't be worth my time, when I have so many other books to read. I can't remember exactly what it was, but something seriously turned me off around the 3rd chapter.
