You may want to consider that, though Jesus encouraged his followers to be distant from their families, he may or may not have been entirely distant from his own. It is the advantage of cult leaders to compel cult members to separate from their own families, in order to nullify the objections of the family and to budget the efforts of the followers in favor of the cult. You notice that Jesus seemed to give his family the cold shoulder, but they still kept in contact. I find Charles Templeton's theory unlikely.

All of this is a bit hard to believe. Do we really know what Jesus said or did, apart from what other people say about it?
