You may want to consider that, though Jesus encouraged his followers to be distant from their families, he may or may not have been entirely distant from his own. It is the advantage of cult leaders to compel cult members to separate from their own families, in order to nullify the objections of the family and to budget the efforts of the followers in favor of the cult. You notice that Jesus seemed to give his family the cold shoulder, but they still kept in contact. I find Charles Templeton's theory unlikely.

All of this is a bit hard to believe. Do we really know what Jesus said or did, apart from what other people say about it?

That's an odd comment coming from a Catholic.

But to address your point, in this forum it's common for us to speak of ''what Jesus (if he existed) is alleged to have said (according to the Gospels)''. You don't have to believe He said anything of the sort in order to discuss the topic. Hell, you can think of Him as a literary character if you like. See my earlier post for the mythical Jesus camp ...

Okay, okay, let me re-phrase the question for all the MJ'ers here: Assuming for the moment that Jesus existed, does the Bible represent Him as being estranged from his family?
