Writing a paper about the bible
I am writing a paper for my English class over the bible. It is a persuasive essay, and I am attempting to persuade my teacher the bible is man made, fallable, and most likely untrue. Most of all I am attempting to show that there is little proof for anything in the bible. I have to write seven pages over it. I was wondering if anyone here knew of some good sites that will give me historical information on the bible and christianity. They have to be .org or .gov sites. I cannot use any .com or .net sites because of "reliability". Thanks for the help!

It would probably be best to stick with books, such as Doherty, Finkelstein, and Friedman and pray that you can persuade her to give you more than a flunking grade if she's a fundy.
Good luck. |

Religioustolerance.org
has some great information. My girlfriend has used it for a few of her papers. Type 'biblical errors' in the search engine on the front page there, a lot of items pop up. I'm at work, so I don't have most of my sites available right now. I'll check and see how this thread is doing when I get home and see if I can forward some more here. |

I find that NASA.gov is a great place to start as it is all about creation of the universe and our planetary explorations and facts about our Earth, Moon, sun and neighboring planets. You will obviously need to reference the bible in your argument and the very first book of Genesis is very easy for your teacher to read, especially if you quote it in your essay.
You will find a quote in the beginning of Genesis which describes the Earth being created before the sun and several other impossibilities. The moon reflects sunlight and does not give off its own light as claimed. Also you will find at the NASA site information about the birth of our moon and our sun. Of course, you will need to use the bible in your argument as it is about the bible and that means trying to pare down the subjects to make it easy for the reader. I would choose subjects like Jonah and the whale and use the internet sites for describing blowholes, what gills are for, where air is stored in mammals (lungs), etc. These alone will take up more than seven pages. If you place a short blurb about Noah and the Ark, you may wish to include timeline quotes about when this would have had to have happened, 4,350 years ago and mention the facts about water pressure, how the waters according to the bible were above all lands for over 1 year, and millions of other reasons why the story is simply impossible, such as the species that need their own specific environments and foods to survive such as frogs, koalas, and penguins. and plant needs such as african violets, the saguaro cactus, and venus fly trap! What about the tower of Babel? 3,750 years ago. Finding websites about languages. Hope this helps, Emeralds :jump: |

You need a more focused topic for seven pages, I think. Also, your teacher's theological beliefs could affect your grade if you decide on something as "proselytizing"/"propagandistic" as "the bible is untrue". For more focus, you could choose to write about the creation stories, the Exodus story, or the infancy narratives, to pick a few examples on which there is abundant literature.
