Default what does likeness mean?

Exodus 20:4 (King James Version)

4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

I know(or i think i do) that "graven image" means "religious idol".
so, from how i see it:
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any religious idol, or any likeness"

So, in this commandment, what does likeness mean? just an "image" of something on earth/heaven/sea, or is it something special like "graven image" in that it means something other then a simple "graven image".

to me 'graven image' would be more 'sculptured representations' so it would more aptly read:

Thou shalt not make unto thee any sculptured representations, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
when put in context with the second part of this commandment(Exodus 20:5) it basically just says dont go making statues or objects or virgin mary's or crosses or other objects of worship and worshipping/ serving them instead of God cos God will whip your butt if you do.

Default Is a cross a graven image?

Interesting question. I have been thinking lately that crosses have been used as graven images. If god was stating that no THING be worshipped above him, then kneeling before a cross would certainly seem to apply.

I am not surprised that Christians do it however. Seems like they just take the parts of the bible they agree with and throw out the rest. The bible can be quoted to prove just about any point you want!
