Keeping up with Ben Witherington
"I Witness" News
Quote:
Keith Morrison, Dateline's correspondent, says the Lexington scholar is on the national media's short list of religious experts.
"Dr. Witherington is very well-known in these circles, and if you're doing a story about the New Testament and the life of Jesus, he's the man to talk to," Morrison said.
. . .
the spotlight found him on Oct. 21, 2002, when he defended the authenticity of an ancient ossuary (a stone burial box) inscribed with the words "James, Son of Joseph, Brother of Jesus."
"Every kind of media known to humankind was present for that news conference," he said. "Thereafter, I was in the Rolodex of all those people."
Israeli antiquities officials labeled the inscription a forgery (the professor says the jury's still out), but not before Witherington had been quoted in a number of major media outlets, including Time magazine. The book he co-authored in 2003, The Brother of Jesus, sold more than 100,000 copies and was translated into German, French, Spanish and Japanese.
