But during the 4th century when you describe texts being produced, weren't the alternative sects being persecuted? If so, how and why could they have been producing new texts?
Or is it possible there really wasn't as much persecution as believed?

FFS they are non canonical with Platonic overtones.

But then again what does Pete care? The facts get in the way of his theory.
If you want to discuss my theory start a new thread, otherwise put down the harp and banjo. I am not discussing my theory but am stating as fact that these manuscripts - such as the "Acts of Mark" are products from the post Nicaean epoch. Does this fact get in the way of your published theory? If not, try and deal with its implications.

The question of the relationship between Gnostic and Platonic overtones in the non canonical texts is not settled. People define "gnostic" in a variety of ways and their is no authoritative definition AFAIK.

Good question. What are the viable alternative answers?

Read Ammianus. Start with the torture of the upper classes.
