I know this is not really Biblical Criticism but it is history. The only people likely to be interested in this are in this forum...

Anyway, I was wondering how many others have seen HBO's series entitled ROME?

I have been renting the series and have really enjoyed it so far (with the exception, of course, of some parts I consider to be rather crude). It is an interesting series that vividly portrays life at the time of Julius Caesar (much better than any other movie or series I've seen in a while).

In fact, the whole series seems to be taken from Caesar's memoirs (and likely other sources), so you will get a bit of actual history to boot.

Anybody else seen the series and enjoyed it?

I assumed it was just pseudo-history garbage in soap opera format.

I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it.

It does require some background knowledge (e.g. Antony/Brutus post-Caesar's-death speaches not shown only the subsequent reactions) and it took some time getting all the names attached to people but I found it worth the time.

I'm currently watching The Tudors on Showtime and, while it isn't horrible or anything, there just seems to be something missing.

Neither comes even close to Deadwood, IMO.

There is some truth to that but, then again, real life tends to often be rather like a soap opera, I think.

I really enjoyed the series, when it was broadcasted here in Spain. It's full of inaccuracies and inventions, but I think the character of Julius Caesar as portrayed in the series is the closest to the idea that I had of him: intelligent, ambitious, aristocraticly pseudo-popular, proud... And that Cleopatra... wow.

What do you who watched it think of the portrayal of Mark Antony? Accurate according to sources, or overdone?
