The Koran and the authentic Hadith have equal standing in Islam, Question : If a person's family rejects the necessity of following anything that's in hadeeth at all, and says you can follow only the Qur'an, can you give them salaams and say "Eid Mubarak" to them to reduce fitnah and not make them upset?. Answer : Praise be to Allaah. Firstly: Every Muslim has to believe in all the ahaadeeth of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – if they are saheeh – and not reject any of them, because his ahaadeeth and his Sunnah are revelation (wahy) from Allaah. Whoever rejects the hadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has rejected revelation from Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “By the star when it goes down (or vanishes). Your companion (Muhammad) has neither gone astray nor has erred. Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only a Revelation revealed. He has been taught (this Qur’aan) by one mighty in power [Jibreel (Gabriel)]. One free from any defect in body and mind then he (Jibreel — Gabriel in his real shape as created by Allaah) rose and became stable [al-Najm 53:1-6] Allaah has commanded the people to obey His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He has enjoined this in many verses of the Qur’aan, of which we will quote some. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Say (O Muhammad): “Obey Allaah and the Messenger (Muhammad). But if they turn away, then Allaah does not like the disbelievers [Aal ‘Imraan 3:32] “He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allaah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad) as a watcher over them [al-Nisa’ 4:80] “O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination [al-Nisa’ 4:59] “And perform As?Salaah (Iqaamat?as-Salaah), and give Zakaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad) that you may receive mercy (from Allaah) [al-Noor 24:56] And there are many similar verses. The one who rejects the Sunnah is a kaafir and an apostate. Al-Suyooti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his essay Miftaah al-Jannah fi Ihtijaaj bi’l-Sunnah: Note that whoever denies that the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), whether it describes his words or deeds, so long as it meets the conditions outlined by the scholars, may be quoted as evidence, is a kaafir and has gone beyond the pale of Islam; he will be gathered with the Jews and the Christians or whomever Allaah wills among the kaafir sects [i.e., on the Day of Resurrection]. Those who want to restrict themselves to the Qur’aan only are called al-Qur’aaniyyoon. This view of theirs is an old view which the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against in more than one hadeeth, as we shall see below. Among the soundest evidence that this view is false is the fact that those who say this do not really follow what they say. How do these people pray? How many times do they pray each day and night? What are the conditions and details of zakaah? What is the nisaab (threshold of wealth) for paying zakaah? What is the amount that must be paid? How do they do Hajj and ‘Umrah? How many times do they circumambulate the Ka’bah? How many times do they go back and forth between al-Safa and al-Marwah? There are many other issues the details of which are not narrated in the Qur’aan, rather they are mentioned in the Qur’aan in general terms, and the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained them in detail in his Sunnah. Would these people refrain from acting upon these rulings because they are not narrated in the Qur’aan? If their answer is yes, then they have passed judgement against themselves that they are kaafirs, because they have denied a basic principle of Islam that no Muslim has any excuse for not knowing and on which there is unanimous consensus among the Muslims. If they reply that they do not refrain from following these rulings, then they have demonstrated that their view is false. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said – after quoting the verses that enjoin following the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – These texts enjoin following the Messenger even if we do not find what he said specifically referred to in the texts of the Qur’aan. These verses also enjoin following the Qur’aan even if we do not find what is said in the Qur’aan specifically mentioned in the hadeeth of the Messenger. So we must follow the Qur’aan and we must follow the Messenger. Following the one implies following the other, for the Messenger conveyed the Book, and the Book commands us to follow the Messenger. The Book and the Messenger do not contradict one another at all, just as the Book does not contradict itself. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Had it been from other than Allaah, they would surely, have found therein many a contradiction [al-Nisa’ 4:82] And there are many ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which state that it is obligatory to follow the Qur’aan and that it is obligatory to follow his Sunnah, for example, the hadeeth in which he said: “I do not want to find any one of you reclining on his pillow, and when he hears of something that I have commanded or forbidden, he says, ‘Between us and you there stands this Qur’aan, whatever we find is permissible in it we will take as permissible, and whatever we find is forbidden in it we will take as forbidden.’ For I have been given the Book and something like it with it; it is like the Qur’aan or more. This hadeeth is narrated in the books of Sunan and Musnad from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with a number of isnads from Abu Tha’labah, Abu Raafi’, Abu Hurayrah and others. In Saheeh Muslim is it narrated from Jaabir that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said in his Farewell Sermon: “I am leaving behind among you something which, if you adhere to it, you will not go astray after that. It is the Book of Allaah. The version narrated by al-Haakim says “The Book of Allaah and my Sunnah. (Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 2937). In al-Saheeh it is narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Abi Awfa that it was said to him: Did the Messenger of Allaah leave a will? He said, No. It was said, How then is it prescribed for people to make wills when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not make a will? He said, He made a will in which he enjoined (adherence to) the Book of Allaah. (Narrated by Muslim, 1634) The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah explains the Qur’aan, as it explains the number of prayers, how much should be recited in them, which should be recited out loud and which quietly. It also explains the amounts of zakaah to be paid and the threshold at which zakaah becomes due; the rituals of Hajj and ‘Umrah; how many times one should circumambulate the Ka’bah, go between al-Safa and al-Marwah and stone the Jamaraat, etc. When any Sunnah is proven to be saheeh, the Muslims are agreed that it is obligatory to follow it. There may be something in the Sunnah which a person thinks appears to go against the apparent meaning of the Qur’aan and add to it, such as the Sunnah which explains the threshold of stealing at which the hadd punishment becomes due, and the Sunnah which stipulates that the married adulterer is to be stoned. This Sunnah must also be followed, according to the view of the Sahaabah and those who followed them in truth, and all the groups of Muslims. Adapted from Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 19/84-86 That which was brought by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is true just as the Qur’aan is true. Secondly: You should not forsake your family; rather you should treat them kindly and strive to call them to follow and accept the Sunnah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Qur’aan) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided [al-Nahl 16:125] “And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination. But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not; but behave with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience. Then to Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do [Luqmaan 31:14-15] And Allaah knows best. |

What is the ruling on shaving the beard or removing part of it? Answer : Praise be to Allaah. Shaving the beard is haraam because of the saheeh ahaadeeth that clearly state this, and because of the general application of texts that forbid resembling the kuffaar. One of these reports is the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Be different from the mushrikeen: let your beards grow and trim your moustaches. According to another report: “Trim your moustaches and let your beards grow. There are other hadeeth which convey the same meaning, which is to leave the beard as it is and let it grow long, without shaving, plucking or cutting any part of it. Ibn Hazm reported that there was scholarly consensus that it is an obligation (fard) to trim the moustache and let the beard grow. He quoted a number of ahaadeeth as evidence, including the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) quoted above, and the hadeeth of Zayd ibn Arqam in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does not remove any of his moustache is not one of us. (Classed as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi). Ibn Hazm said in al-Furoo’: “This is the way of our colleagues [i.e., the Hanbalis]. Is it haraam (to shave it)? Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The Qur’aan, Sunnah and ijmaa’ (scholarly consensus) all indicate that we must differ from the kuffaar in all aspects and not imitate them, because imitating them on the outside will make us imitate them in their bad deeds and habits, and even in beliefs, which will result in befriending them in our hearts, just as loving them in our hearts will lead to imitating them on the outside. Al-Tirmidhi reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “He is not one of us who imitates people other than us. Do not imitate the Jews and Christians. According to another version: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them. (Reported by Imaam Ahmad) ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab rejected the testimony of the person who plucked his beard. Imaam Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed: “It is forbidden to shave the beard, and no one does this except men who are effeminate i.e., those who imitate women. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a thick beard (reported by Muslim from Jaabir). It is not permitted to remove any part of the beard because of the general meaning of the texts which forbid doing so. |

Linguistically, Sunnah is an Arabic word which means a path or a way. However, Islaamically, it is a primary source of law taken from the sayings, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad . As Muslims we believe that the law Prophet Muhammad came with, is a divine revelation from our Creator, Allaah. However many people believe that the Qur'aan is the only form of divine revelation, as it is the literal word of Allaah. This view is incorrect as it contradicts the Qur'aan itself. About the Prophet Muhammad , Allaah says: “Your companion (Muhammad) is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he speak of his own desire. It is (only) the revelation with which he is inspired (Surah An-Najm 53:2-4). Thus as Muslims, we are required to believe that the Qur'aan and Sunnah go hand in hand together as our sources of legislated law. Both are revelation from Allaah, the most High. The Qur'aan is composed of the actual words of Allaah, whereas the Sunnah is expressed through the words, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad . Another difference is that the Qur'aan is recited formally in the prayers whereas the Sunnah is not. As a way of life, Islaam is perfect and complete. However, such are the times that we live in, that some of the liberal elite from the Muslims choose to deny aspects of Islaam to suit their own desires. It is even more sad, that many choose to deny the Sunnah in particular. However this is clearly wrong, as the saying of the Prophet indicates: “I have been given the Qur'aan and something similar to it besides it. Yet a time will come when a man leaning on his couch will say ‘follow the Qur'aan only; what you find in it permissible, take as permissible, and what you find as forbidden, take as forbidden’. But verily what the Messenger of Allaah has forbidden is like what Allaah has forbidden[1]. The words of the Arabian Prophet ring truthfully in our ears again. Today there are a group of people in Pakistan called the Pervezies who say exactly as the Prophet foretold. They firmly insist that the Qur'aan is the only source of law to be followed. Thus, they neither consider the Sunnah a source of law, nor a regulation of our daily affairs. This has led to many Muslim scholars declaring (and rightly so) that the Pervezies are not Muslims. So… Why do we need the Sunnah? Before the advent of the Prophet Muhammad , every nation on this planet had received a Messenger. The purpose of these Messengers was to instruct their people in how to worship Allaah correctly. The Prophet Muhammad was no exception to this. If we had been given the Qur'aan on its own, then most of us who are Muslims would have gone astray through our own interpretations of this book. Rather, Allaah through his mercy, sent a noble Messenger who came to explain this Qur'aan so that the people of the earth may understand their Creator better: “We have revealed the reminder (Qur'aan) to you (O’ Muhammad) in order that you explain to the people what has been revealed to them, that perhaps they may reflect (Surah An-Nahl 16:44). By explaining the Qur'aan through his words and actions, the Prophet through his Sunnah, gives us the best example of how this book is to be understood and practiced. This is why Allaah says: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah you have the most beautiful pattern of conduct (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21). Our need for the Sunnah is so great, that without it our religion would be incomplete. In fact, this is the exact predicament which all the other religious scriptures find themselves in. Books such as the Bible and the Baghvad Gita, are so lacking in a divine explanation, that one can never understand (from them) as how to worship Allaah properly. As Muslims we do not have this worry, because the Sunnah is our divine explanation. The Qur'aan commands us to worship Allaah through prayer, fasting, charity etc., but it does not inform us of how to perform these duties practically. It is through his infinite Wisdom, that Allaah has sent us a practical example in the form of the Prophet and his teachings. The Prophet's adherence and practice of the Qur'aan was so exemplary, that upon being asked about his character, his wife Aisha said: “…his character was that of the Qur’aan[2]. So… Is it obligatory to follow the Sunnah? Obeying Allaah is without doubt, obligatory. So when Allaah says: “Whosoever obeys the Messenger, has indeed obeyed Allaah (Surah An-Nisa 4:80), it should be clear that one has obeyed Allaah by obeying the Messenger. Furthermore Muhammad said: “…whosoever disobeys me, disobeys Allaah[3]. Following the Sunnah is clearly an obligation upon every Muslim. The obligation is stressed even more when Allaah says: “But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith, until they make you (O’ Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept them with full submission (Sura An-Nisa 4:65) and : “It is not fitting for a believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decreed by Allaah and His Messenger to have any choice in the matter. If anyone disobeys Allaah and His Messenger he is clearly astray (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:36). As Muslims we know that when Allaah or His Messenger decree something for us, it will always benefit us, even if we do not realize it. Thus, submitting to the Messenger is only there for our benefit and not to oppress us, as some mistakenly believe. It must also be remembered that besides being the Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad was an Arab man living in seventh century Arabia. This meant that he had his own personal tastes and preferences just like any other mortal. These preferences are clearly distinguished from the Islamic law which is binding upon everyone. Thus, his personal Sunnah is clearly distinct from the legal Sunnah which he brought. An example of this distinction is when the Prophet came to Madeenah[4] and found the inhabitants artificially pollinating the date palm trees. When he asked them why they did so, they replied that it was their habit. He suggested to them that maybe if they did not do it; it may be better. So they gave it up and the following year their crop was greatly diminished. When they told him of this he replied: “I am only a human being. When I issue any command to you regarding your religion, then accept it, but when I issue any command to you based on my own opinion, I am merely a human being[5]. Islaam is a religion which singles out Allaah alone for worship. It is for this reason that the possibility of Muhammad being anything more than a man, is totally absurd. As him being the Messenger of Allaah we believe that his Sunnah is infallible, but at the same time we maintain a perfect balance by remembering the words of Allaah: “Say (O’ Muhammad) : ‘I am only a man like you (except that) it has been revealed to me that your God is one God (Surah Al-Kahf 18:110). True Muslims will follow Muhammad , not worship him. So… What are the benefits of the Sunnah? One of the scholars of the past, Imam Malik[6], said: “The Sunnah is like the ark of Noah. Whoever embarks upon it achieves salvation and whoever rejects it, is drowned[7]. This salvation is the admittance into Paradise and avoiding the fire of Hell. Regret is a terrible state. But regret on the Day of Judgment will be even worse for the one who did not follow the Sunnah: “And remember the day when the wrongdoer will bite at his hand and say: ‘Oh! Would that I had taken the path of the Messenger’ (Surah Al-Furqan 25:27). This regret will continue during the punishment: “On the day the faces will be tossed about in the fire, they will say: ‘Woe to us! Would that we had obeyed Allaah and his Messenger (Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:67). On the other hand, the one who adhered to the Sunnah will attain the ultimate benefit: “Whoever obeys Allaah and his Messenger will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow to live there (forever), and that will be the great achievement (Surah An-Nisa 4:13). This is further confirmed by the Prophet himself when he said: “He who obeys me enters paradise, and he who disobeys me refuses to enter paradise[8]. The sweetness of the Sunnah will also be tasted during this life. The vastness of the Prophet's way is such, that is produces a physical, spiritual and psychological benefit to its adherent. This fact is also recognized by non Muslim scientists who have discovered that the Sunnah is extremely accurate in its conformity with modern scientific data. Scientific and Medical facts which were recorded more then 1000 years ago, from the tongue of the Prophet , have only been recently discovered. Such findings prove that the Sunnah could only have been divinely revealed. Thus, the one who lives his life by this law will bring goodness upon himself and upon the rest of this decaying world. As for one who chooses to discard these divine rules, then that is a person who has lost a treasure which far outweighs any treasure that the earth can bring forward. A treasure which will bring eternal happiness. So… We hope that what has been read, will encourage the reader to investigate into the way of this amazing man, and adhere to the law which he brought. Through investigation Insha'allaah (if God Wills) will come reform. And the one who reforms his life around the Sunnah of Muhammad , can be assured of a complete guidance: “I have left two things among you, as long as you hold fast to them you will never go astray. They are the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger[9] Footnotes: 1. Authentic - Reported by Ahmad and Abu Dawood. 2. Reported by Muslim - Eng. Trans. Vol 1., Pp358-360, No. 1623. 3. Reported by Bukhari - Eng. Trans. Vol 9., p.198, No. 251. 4. The Prophet (saws) immigrated from his hometown of Mecca to the city of Madeenah. 5. Reported by Muslim. Eng. Trans. Vol 4., p.1259, No. 5831. 6. Malik bin Anas was born in 713 CE in Madeenah, where he grew up studying Hadeeth. He soon became the leading scholar of the region and often ran into the authorities for speaking the truth. This resulted in him being jailed and flogged. He compiled the classical book of hadeeth Al-Muwatta, which took over 40 years. The Maalikite School of Islamic law takes its name after him. 7. Reported in Majmoo al-Fataawa (4/57). 8. Reported by Bukhari - Eng. Trans. Vol 9., p.284, No. 384. 9. Authentic - Reported from Al-Muwatta. |

1) The verses you presented are NOT from the Qur'an
2) The verses you have presented with are NOT related to my post about Khadijah 3) Solomon had hundreds of wives. This story does NOT originate in Islam It is found in the Bible and the Kabbala 4) The age of Aisha varies considerably deepending on the source. Most Shia sources approximate her age closer to 18 Thank you for wasting my time. Please post Qur'anic verses. This thread is about the Qur'an And stop using apologetics and polemicized information. REPLY 2-You said Mohamed was a good family man. My reply is relevant 4- the source is an authentic Hadith from Bukhari. An authentic Hadith cannot be disputed without becoming a heretic Sunnah is the life, actions and sayings of the Prophet, it is accepted by Islam as Second Revelation. Google it and use Islamic sites Muslims consider the life, actions and authentic sayings of the Profet Mohamed to have the same meaning to them as the life of Jesus has for Christians I am clarifying some point because I feel the need to explain what I have written |

Sahih Bukhari is a collection of sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), also known as the sunnah. The reports of the Prophet's sayings and deeds are called ahadith. Bukhari lived a couple of centuries after the Prophet's death and worked extremely hard to collect his ahadith. Each report in his collection was checked for compatibility with the Qur'an, and the veracity of the chain of reporters had to be painstakingly established. Bukhari's collection is recognized by the overwhelming majority of the Muslim world to be one of the most authentic collections of the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). Islamic Law is taken from the Qur’an and Sunnah. The Sunnah in this sense both explains the Qur’an, and also gives additional rules and guidance. The Qur’an in many places tells us to obey the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and thus it is wrong—as some deviant sects claim—that the Qur’an is sufficient and that we do not need the Sunnah. It is clear that exegesis of the Koran needs the Sunnah. I have kept myself within the subject of this thread :Interpretation of the Koran To pretend that it is possible to interpret the Koran without the Sunnah is to go against Islam and sure to fail I will not post again Bye. |

I hope that you do NOT post again. Like River has stated earlier....posting a zillion verses is disrespectful ( and tacky). In another thread, you stated that you share the same interest in Islam as me. It is quite obvious that you don't give a damn about Islam. Well, anyways I wish you the best in your spiritual journey. -River Shalom |

Since you have already dismissed yourself.....I would like to reiterate for the audience....the Sunnah is NOT Revelation....it is merely inspiration....It is never meant to be taken literally...nor is it taken literally amongst the literate Muslims. There is a great degree of truth in the Hadiths but it requires thorough research and methodology...And I am certain, that you "Iskandar" are NOT an expert in Hadith exegeses. -River |
